Kuldeep Yadav returns, Mohammed Siraj rested: India’s probable XI for 2nd Test against Bangladesh

India could opt to give one of their pacers a breather in the second Test.

India will look to whitewash Bangladesh in series when the two teams meet in Kanpur for the second Test. The pitch at the Green Field stadium is expected to be as per the Indian team’s wishes. The curators have reportedly created two types of pitches for the game. While one is Kanpur’s signature black pitch which will help spinners, the other appears to be similar to the pace-friendly track that was rolled out in Chennai for the first Test.

To be clear, the type of pitch chosen for the game will have a big impact on deciding India’s squad for the game. Although they are unlikely to make too many changes, India could keep or drop the third-fastest bowler depending on the conditions. The first Test was rare in that both sides chose three fast bowlers despite the match being played in India.

If India do the same thing they did during the Bangladesh tour, they could opt for the pace-friendly ground in Kanpur. However, considering there is a big five-Test series coming up in Australia later this year and a Champions Trophy to be played soon after next year, they might also want to be mindful of giving their pacers as much rest as possible. They would also be confident that their world-class spin duo Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja would surpass Bangladesh’s formidable squad of spinners. They could also bring in Kuldeep Yadav as an additional wicket-taking spin option.

India continues with Bumrah

However, it is likely that Jasprit Bumrah will not be the pacer to take a break. Instead, it could be Mohammed Siraj, who had a very brief injury scare in the first Test. Although the consequences were not serious, India would be tempted to play it safe. Akash Deep appears to be one of the best candidates to become India’s third pacer in Australia if Mohammed Shami does not return and hence he will definitely get another game.
