In the wake of Hurricane Helene, the Midwest Food Bank is mobilizing relief efforts

MORTON (25News Now) – The Midwest Food Bank, based in central Illinois, is mobilizing relief efforts as Hurricane Helene brings damaging winds, rain and flash flooding to the southeastern United States

At the same time, the organization is calling on the public to help fund the supplies and fuel needed to bring essential goods to the region.

The Morton Food Bank Disaster Relief Center is ready to provide food boxes and cleanup kits to the hardest hit communities.

In Florida, state agencies and several relief organizations are working with the Midwest Food Bank to provide water, other beverages and MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat).

Additionally, the Georgia Division of the Food Bank is partnering with the Salvation Army to provide three half-loads of water and beverages to areas where there is a lack of clean water.

“The Midwest Food Bank’s commitment to disaster relief means we are always prepared to respond quickly in times of crisis,” said Lisa Martin, executive director of the food bank, in a prepared statement.

“Our goal is to ease the burden by providing essential supplies such as food, water and cleaning tools, and work with our partners to provide assistance to those in need,” Martin said.

Since its founding in 2003 on a rural farm in McLean County, the Midwest Food Bank says it is the largest food bank in the country, with 10 domestic locations serving 23 states. There are also locations in Haiti and East Africa.

The food bank provides free food to nonprofit partner organizations, according to a news release.
