DaRon Holmes’ spirits are still high during injury rehab

Denver Nuggets rookie DaRon Holmes II is without crutches as he recovers from a torn right Achilles tendon suffered in the NBA Summer League.

Holmes underwent surgery for the injury in July and is expected to miss the entire season. The team was granted a $1.53 million disabled player exemption following the injury, giving the front office some financial flexibility to potentially add a player through signing, trade or waiver claim by March 10.

The 22nd pick told DNVR Sports this week that he has started doing leg and arm lifts in the weight room and is now back to light shooting on the court. He remains in good spirits during his rehabilitation, said DeAndre Jordan on Thursday at media day.

His mood has been good the last few days I’ve been here. We still laugh and joke and make fun and still make him do beginner stuff. He has no crutches so he can walk around and do the things we expect him to do. If you’re injured and you’re close to the team, you’re still in the locker room, you have the energy and you don’t feel isolated, I think that can really help your rehab.

Holmes was a consensus second-team All-American last season as a junior at Dayton, averaging 20.4 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.1 blocks on 38.6% shooting in 33 games from 3-point range. He was also named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.

The 6-foot-1 forward had a productive debut with the Nuggets before his injury on July 12, posting 11 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal in 25 minutes. He finished the game shooting 4-of-8 from the field, including a perfect 3-of-3 from 3-point range.

The news of the injury was likely devastating for Holmes. However, the 22-year-old appears to be making the most of his recovery and is aiming for a return as quickly as possible.
