Montgomery County declares a state of emergency and warns of possible evacuations

MONTOGERY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – A local state of emergency was declared in Montgomery County Friday afternoon.

The move comes amid expected flooding across the region due to Hurricane Helene.

Although there are no immediate weather-related emergencies in the county, county officials said they are encouraging people in the following areas to prepare accordingly.

  • Areas of McCoy and Little River Road (Exit 105).
    • Voluntary evacuations are planned for areas at risk of flooding.
  • Areas along the New River including Big Falls Road and Roundhouse Road
    • Little River Road at Exit 105
  • Elliston/Shawsville
    • There are currently no evacuations planned. However, citizens are urged to exercise caution in areas near waterways, particularly along Cannery Road, Flick Drive and Alleghany Springs Road.

Evacuations were also encouraged in Wythe County and Pulaski County on Friday.
