White House mother outraged by data showing how many illegal immigrant criminals are at large in the US

The White House has not yet commented on new data presented to lawmakers showing the number of illegal immigrants convicted of sex crimes and murder who are not in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody.

The agency provided data on illegal immigrants with criminal charges or convictions to Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas. The data, as of July 2024, is broken down by people in custody and those not in custody, referred to as the non-detention list.

The non-detained list includes noncitizens who have final orders of removal or are in removal proceedings but are not in ICE custody.

There are more than 7.4 million people on that list, up from about 3.7 million when former President Trump left office.

The data shows that among those not incarcerated, there are 425,431 convicted offenders and 222,141 offenders with criminal charges pending. The data does not indicate how many of these criminals are newcomers.

By comparison, in August 2016, near the end of the Obama administration, ICE reported that about 2.2 million non-citizens were on the non-detained list and about 368,574 were convicted criminals.

According to the latest data, the offenders include 62,231 convicted of assault, 14,301 convicted of burglary, 56,533 convicted of drug abuse and 13,099 convicted of murder. Another 2,521 were convicted of kidnapping and 15,811 were convicted of sexual assault. There are another 1,845 with pending murder charges, 42,915 with assault charges, 3,266 with burglary charges and 4,250 with assault charges.

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the data and whether it was aware of the numbers. Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign also did not comment. Harris is on the southern border in Arizona.

Fox News Digital has also contacted the Department of Homeland Security.

The news sparked outrage among Republicans, who linked the numbers to the Biden administration’s policies and sanctuary cities refusing to cooperate with ICE.

‘Political stunt’: Critics reject Harris’ expected Arizona border visit as immigration remains top issue

Rep. Gonzales called the data “beyond troubling” and said, “It should be a wake-up call for the Biden-Harris administration and cities across the country that are hiding behind protective measures.”

“It’s time for Washington to move beyond rhetoric and get results. Americans deserve to feel safe in their communities. As an appropriator, I will do everything in my power to ensure ICE has the resources necessary to deport noncitizens with criminal records. “This must be a priority,” Gonzales said in a statement.

“The Biden-Harris administration is also helping to clean up the mess created by their failed policies. She has the ear of the mayors of the sanctuary cities. It’s time to encourage them to reverse course and put the safety of American citizens first.”

Mark Green, chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, said releasing illegal immigrants into the U.S. defies “all common sense.”

Immigrants line up at a remote U.S. Border Patrol processing center after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in Lukeville, Arizona.

“This is crazy. No civilized, well-functioning society should tolerate this,” he said.

In the letter to Gonzales, ICE took aim at so-called “sanctuary cities” that refuse to cooperate with federal law enforcement in deporting illegal immigrant criminals.

“ICE recognizes that some jurisdictions fear that cooperation with federal immigration authorities will undermine trust in immigrant communities and make it more difficult for local law enforcement to serve these populations. However, “sanctuary” policies can end up shielding dangerous criminals, often victimizing these same communities,” it said.

It also highlighted DHS’s efforts to deport illegal immigrants.

“From mid-May 2023 to the end of July 2024, DHS deported or returned more than 893,600 individuals, including more than 138,300 individuals in family units. The majority of all people encountered at the southwest border in the last three years have been deported, returned or expelled.”

The Biden administration has prioritized eliminating threats to public safety and national security in narrower priorities it released in 2021, but critics have linked those priorities to a decline in ICE removals.

Republicans have blamed the border crisis on administration policies, including the rollback of Trump policies that restricted “catch and release.”

The administration has said it needs more funding and reforms from Congress, including through a bipartisan Senate bill introduced this year. This bill would increase the number of ICE detention beds, but administration critics have pointed to numbers that show not all beds are currently occupied.

When asked about increasing the number of non-incarcerated people this summer, a White House spokesman referred to that bill.

“Republicans in Congress had the opportunity to support the fairest and toughest reforms in decades, and they chose to put partisan interests ahead of improving our immigration system and securing our borders,” the spokesman said.

“Republicans in Congress have proven that they don’t care about securing our border, because if they had, they honestly would have supported the bipartisan deal.”

The release of the data comes as Harris is visiting the southern border in Arizona and trying to portray herself as tougher on the border than former President Trump, whom she blames for failing to pass the border law.

“Donald Trump has introduced a bill to improve border security — just so he can win this election,” she said Friday. “As I have shown throughout my career, I will not back down from my plan to make our border more secure.”
