Community steps up and delivers more than 200 tips in Five Points South mass shooting case

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Birmingham’s police chief says the community is doing a great job calling in tips on that deadly and tragic mass shooting in Five Points South.

In fact, he says between the QR code they created and Metro Alabama Crime Stoppers, they’ve gotten more than 200 tips.

Chief Scott Thurmond wants to assure you that law enforcement is doing everything they can to find those responsible for the mass shooting, but he says it is more than just law enforcement working to find justice.

The BPD chief says tips from the community have been very helpful in their investigation. They want to find the people who killed four victims and hurt seventeen others and they want to find them quickly.

“We have daily updates on this case. I am extremely happy with the direction this investigation is going. I am very confident that we will get to some sort of resolution. It is just taking a little bit of time, but with our federal partners and everybody working together, there is just a tremendous amount of eyes on this,” said Chief Thurmond.

Chief Thurmond says any small detail could be vital to their investigation, and that the public has really stepped up to help.

“I mean we haven’t seen a case where we have gotten this many tips in the past. So this is a very good thing for us, but we still need more to come in so we can get some resolution for this particular case and for the victims who were injured and lost their lives,” said Thurmond.

Chief Thurmond also confirmed what the mayor said earlier this week and says BPD will place additional officers in popular entertainment districts.

“We just want to ensure the safety of everyone. We hate it for the victim’s families and the victims who were injured or lost their lives. To the five points south community, we are there for you. There will be an increased police presence in that area as well as some of the other entertainment districts and we are going to recover from this,” said Thurmond.
