New Delhi: The All India Tennis Association (AITA) elected a new set of officers unopposed on Saturday, but the result was not officially announced as per the directions of the Delhi High Court, which is hearing a petition alleging violations of the sports law the association.

AITA was scheduled to hold the elections at its annual general meeting, but a vote was not required as the returning officer only received one nomination for each office.

In addition to a new president, general secretary and treasurer, the national tennis association elected eight vice presidents, four joint secretaries and ten executive members.

It was learned that initially Rohit Rajpal and another candidate had filed their nominations for the post of president, but later India’s non-playing Davis Cup captain Rajpal withdrew his candidature.

Former India players Somdev Devvarman and Purav Raja had sought a stay on the AITA elections, claiming the association was not adhering to the sports law and several candidates were not allowed to contest the elections.

The Supreme Court did not stay the elections but asked AITA and the Sports Ministry to file their response.

“The election remains subject to the result of the immediate written request. The election result must be kept in a sealed envelope by the returning officer, which means the election result will not be made public,” the court said.

The matter will be heard on October 14.

Until then, the outgoing team and the new team will take care of the association’s work together.
