WADA is taking action against acquittals and calling for long bans

Jannik Sinner cannot yet be sure of the acquittal

WADA is appealing against the acquittal of world number one Jannik Sinner in two doping offenses at the International Court of Justice. She calls for a ban for the South Tyrolean.

Sinner tested positive twice for the banned anabolic steroid Clostebol in March. However, the Italian was not suspended. The responsible International Tennis Integrity Authority (ITIA) justified the acquittal by saying that no intentional fault or negligence could be proven on the part of the sinners.

According to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), this finding is “incorrect under current rules”. She therefore calls for “a ban of one to two years” for sinners. However, the authority does not require an additional cancellation of results in addition to those that have already been ordered by the court of first instance.

Sinner explained in a statement published on social networks that the substance entered his body through the hands of his physiotherapist. Accordingly, the carer used a spray containing Clostebol, which is available over the counter in Italy, to treat a cut on his finger.

The ITIA considered a scientific expert sinner explanation to be credible. That’s why the tennis agency refrained from suspending Sinner, at least temporarily. The decision caused a lack of understanding within the tennis scene.
