CSD Görlitz: CSD and right-wing protests in Görlitz – largely peaceful

Accompanied by right-wing counter-protest, hundreds of people marked the 3rd. Christopher Street Day (CSD) celebrated in Görlitz. Under the motto “Equal rights for everyone!” they marched through the border town and also to the Polish side. German and Polish right-wing extremists had called on social networks to oppose the CSD. According to the police, more than 700 people took part in the CSD parade, and around 460 took part in the counter-protest.

Both the German and the Polish police had prepared a major operation. According to the police, a direct clash between the two gatherings was prevented. «The two elevators were sent on the route with a time delay. First the CSD and then the counter-protest,” explains a police spokesman. The information remained relatively calm and there were no riots or physical altercations.

Suspicion of sedition

At the beginning of the counter-meeting under the motto “Preserve homeland and tradition – protect children from gender madness”, some participants chanted forbidden rights slogans. “It is now being investigated, among other things, on suspicion of incitement to hatred,” said the police spokesman.

The CSD takes place every year in many cities around the world in memory of the events of June 28, 1969 in New York: police stormed a bar on Christopher Street, triggering several days of protests by gays, lesbians and trans people, among others.
