This way you can see every game in the new format

Goodbye CL group stage

For every football fan, the structure was clear – the Champions League begins with the group phase. Four teams play against each other twice on six match days, once in the home stadium and once away. But this process has now come to an end. Because from this season the premier class starts with a league system. This not only influences the kick-off times, but also the number of participants and the number of games.

In this article we explain all the new features of this year’s Champions League season and show you where you can watch all the games in the live stream. Because nothing has changed for a change. The majority of games continue to run DAZN and one selected game per week continues Amazon Prime.

Here you can see all parties in the live stream

Amazon Prime will then broadcast the remaining 17 clashes. What exactly changed this year?

Starting this season, 36 instead of 32 teams will play in the Champions League. Of course, that means there will be more games. The number of games increases to 203 parties. These are only the games in the new league system.

As already mentioned, instead of the previous 32 teams in eight groups of four, 36 teams will now compete in a single league. This league follows the so-called “Swiss model”, which is already used in chess in a similar form. But what does that mean exactly?

More games for all teams: Each team plays a total of eight games against eight different opponents – four of them at home and four away. The pairings are determined using a seeding system that attempts to create the most balanced encounters possible. These eight games replace the previous six games in the group stage, meaning more games overall for the clubs.

Direct progression or play-off round: The best eight teams in this league qualify directly for the round of 16. The teams placed ninth to 24th will play in an additional knockout round for the remaining eight places in the round of 16. The teams that finish in the bottom twelve places will withdraw from the competition and have no chance of promotion to the UEFA Europa League.

Expanded number of participants: The league now includes 36 teams, four more than in the previous format. These additional places go to the third-placed club in the fifth-best league in the UEFA ranking, a national champion who qualifies via the so-called “champion playoffs” and two teams who qualify for the league via their club coefficients, they cannot think of were able to qualify directly through their league anyway.

Important changes for fans and clubs: The new format not only brings more games, but also a greater variety of opponents for the participating teams. What this means for fans is that they can see more high-quality parties with different teams. The new format is also expected to keep the tension high until the final day of the match, as the league positions will be contested until the very end.

Final playoffs: After the league phase, the usual knockout round begins, starting with the round of 16. From this point on, the format remains unchanged and the game will continue to be played in a knockout format over two legs until the winner is finally determined in the final.

New matchday: What is also new is that on some match days, Champions League games will also take place on Thursday (the actual Europa and Conference League match day).

This new format is being introduced to further increase the appeal of the Champions League while also offering clubs more games against different opponents. However, this also means a greater burden on players and could fuel discussions about the balance between domestic and international competitions. How this new league system will impact player health and fitness will certainly bring some debate.
