Luxembourg: CFL’s first autonomous train starts

This Sunday, the first passengers boarded an autonomous train operated by the Luxembourg Railway Company (CFL), during a maiden journey between the stations of Luxembourg and Ettelbruck. Autonomous train? In concrete terms, this means that the control software is evolving and some control processes are now tested automatically.

“After the inauguration, railcar 2410 will be in regular service for customers, i.e. the railway company, from this Sunday afternoon. From Monday, the Coradia 2409 railcar will also be available to CFL customers.”

These two railcars, each with 334 seats, will primarily run between Luxembourg and Diekirch. Their commissioning is the start of the replacement of the 21 railcars of the old Z2 type.

With the purchase of 34 Coradia Stream High Capacity railcars built by Alstom, the CFL promises its customers the most modern comfort on board, such as WiFi on board and a 230 V socket with a USB-C port per seat and 46 percent more seats 2026. For this purpose, 37 train attendants, twelve trainers and seven train attendant trainers were trained to work with the Coradia trains, which cost 400 million euros to purchase.
