MESA, AZ (AZFamily) – A man is dead after a police shooting near an east Mesa neighborhood early Sunday morning.

According to Mesa police, the shooting happened around 2 a.m. near 104th Street and Bramble Avenue, north of Broadway Road

According to authorities, an officer attempted to stop a man who was riding a bicycle closer to Broadway and Cheshire, about a quarter-mile from the crime scene.

According to investigators, the man, who was only identified as being 37 years old, ran into a canal and was later discovered in an empty wash basin. At that point, the man allegedly pulled out a gun and pointed it at an officer when the officer fired back.

The Chandler Police Department will be leading this investigation as part of the East Valley Critical Response Team. It is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings to be reviewed by an outside agency.

No further information was released.
