MATCH REPORT | 2024 China Open: Coco Gauff prevails against Katie Boulter and ends the rainy day in Beijing

Since most of the games in Beijing could not be completed due to bad weather, only those playing under one roof managed to play their matches. One of them was Coco Gauff, who ended the day at the China Open.
The world No. 6 booked her place in the fourth round of the China Open with a 7-5, 6-2 win over No. 26 seed Katie Boulter on Sunday. This was one of only four matches ended due to rain at the WTA 1000 tournament.
She should compete against either Katie Volynets or Naomi Osaka in the fourth round. However, this is not yet confirmed as the duo will only play tomorrow. Other games, such as Peyton Stearns against Anna Kalinskaya, were started but not finished, even though they were already well advanced.

But because she was playing under the roof, Gauff had the advantage, and with her talent for getting through opening rounds, it was exactly the script Gauff wanted. They survived a tight first set and were then able to finish it easily. After squandering a 5-2 lead, she fought back and took the lead, breaking Boulter on her third set point in the twelfth game. She then won eight of the last 10 games and secured victory.

With their new coach Matt Daly they will also improve their serve. They held serve four times to avoid double faults and slips that seemed to mar her game, and she was pleased with her efforts after the match.

“I thought I played well. I knew what I had to do, so I tried to do my best,” said Gauff after the game;

Coco Gauff, serving much better this week, beats Katie Boulter 7-5, 6-2 to reach the last 16 at the Beijing WTA 1000. Expect the winner of… Osaka vs. Volynets (played tomorrow).
