Douglas County officers fatally shoot gun-wielding suicide bomber

Douglas County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a man Saturday night who had a gun and had told police he was suicidal.

The man, who lived in unincorporated Douglas County, called Lone Tree police early Saturday evening and said he was suicidal, Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said in a video posted to social media. Police and officers responded to the man’s apartment complex near Peoria Street and Roosevelt Lane. Weekly said a Community Response Team officer attempted to de-escalate the situation and at one point the man fired a bullet inside his apartment.

After about an hour, the man finally came out of his apartment with a gun in his hand and fired a bullet into the air, Weekly said. The man then turned and pointed the gun at officers, the sheriff said, several of whom opened fire, striking the man. He was transported to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.
