Tennis: Carlos Alcaraz comments on Sinner scandal: “I feel for him”

French Open and Wimbledon winner Carlos Alcaraz has come to the aid of his colleague Jannik Sinner, who has been accused of doping.

The case surrounding the world number one is “not really good” for tennis, but it is also “difficult” for Sinner. “I feel for him,” said Alcaraz after reaching the quarterfinals at the ATP tournament in Beijing, where Sinner is also still competing.

He hopes, added the Spaniard Alcaraz, “that this thing will soon be over and he (Sinner; editor) can concentrate on what he loves, namely playing tennis.”

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced on Saturday that an appeal had been lodged with the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against Sinner’s acquittal after two positive tests for the banned steroid Clostebol in March. WADA calls for a ban of up to two years.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) accepted Sinner’s explanation in the spring that the drug entered his body when his physical therapist used a spray containing the drug to treat a cut and then gave the player massages and sports therapy.
