Bruno Fernandes makes damning four-word confession after Man Utd star sees red against Spurs | Football | sport

Bruno Fernandes accepted he let down his Manchester United team-mates after they were sent off in the 3-0 defeat to Tottenham. The Red Devils captain received the first red card of his Old Trafford career after a controversial incident with James Maddison.

Fernandes was caught in a tackle on the Spurs midfielder but continued his desperate attempt to win the ball. His left foot hit Maddison high on the shin, prompting referee Chris Kavanagh to show a red card in the United star’s direction.

Sky Sports reporter Patrick Davison revealed that Fernandes volunteered for a post-match interview, a rare move from a player who was sent off in a game.

Asked to explain why he had offered to speak, Fernandes revealed: “Just to say that I let my teammates down with the one man (sent-off), I really appreciate everything they put on do on the pitch.” Obviously it was more difficult for her.

“We didn’t start the game well when it was 11 against 11 and when that happens the red card result is on the other side. They (Fernandes’ teammates) did very well, they fought and of course we conceded two more goals. It was difficult to cover all the spaces, but we can take a lot of good things from this and I’m very proud of the team.”

The 30-year-old praised his colleagues for continuing to try to achieve a positive result. He continued: “Nobody likes being sent off. It’s not a good feeling to see my teammates running a lot to get a result and score a goal because that’s exactly what they were trying to do. They tried to get the result at our expense” and in the end we conceded two more goals, but they tried everything.
