Reading tip/Mena Watch: What is behind the visit of a US delegation to Libya?

A high-level American delegation visited Libya and met with representatives of the country’s two sides in the conflict, raising questions about the goals of the talks.

A few days ago, an American delegation consisting of Deputy Secretary of Defense Celeste Wallander, Deputy Commander of the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) John Brennan and Charge d’Affaires of the US Embassy Jeremy Brent visited the Libyan city of Benghazi, where they met with the warlord Khalifa Haftar (photo) and several high-ranking eastern Libyan army leaders met. The group then traveled to Tripoli and met with the head of the Government of National Accord Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, the Chief of Staff of the Western Libyan Armed Forces Mohammed Al-Haddad and other military leaders.
