An unexpected 3-0 team faces an NFC Championship contender to close Week 4 of the 2024 NFL season, and the circumstances are ideal for a nationally televised statement that ends in September. The undefeated Seattle Seahawks visit the Detroit Lions for the second game of a Monday Night Football doubleheader that could be a make-or-break game for both franchises.

After last year’s push to the NFC Championship game, the Lions (2-1) are walking a fine line so far. They posted narrow wins over the Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals while losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2. Compared to the 2023 season, Detroit’s offense is actually averaging a few more yards per game, but isn’t producing points at the same level. The Lions rank 26th in red zone efficiency and have a negative turnover differential through three games, but the defense has been reliably led by defensive lineman Aidan Hutchinson (6.5 sacks).

They face a revamped Seattle defense under new coach Mike Macdonald, who coached Hutchinson as defensive coordinator at Michigan in 2021. The Seahawks (3-0) are the first team since the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1979 to start a season 3-0. According to the NFL, fewer than 150 yards are allowed in each game. Seattle has a chance to establish itself as an early NFC West favorite after defeating the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots and Tua Tagovailova-less Miami Dolphins in rookie Bo Nix’s first start.
