PREVIOUS, August 26: Netflix released the first teaser on Monday morning for one of the most anticipated films of the year – the Spanish-language musical crime comedy Emilia Peréz from Jacques Audiard (“A Prophet”), which won several awards when it premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Emilia Peréz hits select theaters in the US and Canada on November 1st before debuting on the streamer on November 13th. She uses song, dance and bold visuals to chronicle the journeys of four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness. Among them is Rita (Zoe Saldaña), an overlooked dead-end lawyer who agrees to help the fearsome cartel leader Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascón) fake her death so she can finally live authentically as herself.

The film, starring Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz and Edgar Ramírez, received an eleven-minute standing ovation at its premiere in competition at Cannes and won the Jury Prize and the Best Actress Prize, shared by the female members of the ensemble, as well as the Cannes Soundtrack Award.

From Cannes, Netflix secured North American and UK rights to the film, which was one of the highest grossing films in this year’s market. In her Deadline review at the time, Stephanie Bunbury said of the film: “On paper it looks crazy as a loose wheel.” A largely Spanish-language musical about a Mexican drug lord who undergoes gender reassignment surgery, starring former Disney teen star Selena Gomez as a gangster’s wife… but here it is on screen, a musical marvel.”

Emilia Peréz, written by Audiard, Thomas Bidegain and Léa Mysius, was the former French filmmaker’s seventh film to screen at Cannes. Pascal Caucheteux, Audiard, Valérie Schermann and Anthony Vaccarello produced, with Pauline Lamy serving as executive producer.
