The Maine Police Academy decides to expand disciplinary measures for officers

The state police academy is meeting today to decide whether to adopt proposed rules that allow for more comprehensive discipline for police officers.

The new standards would allow the academy to deskill or discipline officers for actions such as harassment, falsifying communications, possession of illegal drugs or conduct that damages the public’s trust in law enforcement.

Two major police unions, the Maine Association of Police and the Maine State Law Enforcement Association, say the new rules are too broad and vague and could hinder future recruiting.

The Press Herald reports that the Maine Criminal Justice Board of Trustees will address the union complaints at a special meeting today in Vassalboro.

The 18-member board includes police officers, prosecutors, city administrators and citizen representatives.

With a few exceptions, civil servants can currently only be punished for criminal activities.
