Anyone who travels by bike or on foot will certainly have had the Komoot app in their hands or on their iPhone. A similar route and tour planner app is also available in the form of Canua (App Store link) for touring enthusiasts who use their canoes, kayaks and SUP boards to get around.

Downloading Canua is basically free and is financed through in-app purchases for regions and a premium subscription. About 35 MB of free storage space and iOS/iPadOS 13.6 or newer are required for installation; the app can be used entirely in German.

After registering or logging in with an existing account, Canua users can plan their water routes, use offline maps and use over 150,000 objects and more than 5,000 detailed bodies of water. According to its own statement, the application is reliable “water information from the printed water guide of the German Canoe Association”.

Tours can be recorded using GPS, and completed tours can also be exported and forwarded as GPX. The application provides water information and maps for many European countries and their waters, including the entire course of the Danube from its source to the Black Sea. “Convenient entry and exit points, weirs, bridges, ferries, power lines, general danger areas, rest and overnight accommodations and much more are clearly shown on the map,” says the development team.

The Canua development team recently released another update in the German App Store, which upgrades the app to version 2.5.0 and brings with it some exciting new features. So there is even more information on the map that is even more nuanced. The routes of the most beautiful tours are now also part of Canua’s Edition PLUS.

Improved route information

Often one and the same body of water point in the database has several properties and therefore several round symbols at one and the same coordinate. To see all the properties of a water point, simply tap on the object and all properties will be displayed with their symbols both in the speech bubble that appears first and in the object description. Previously, the properties of an object could only be differentiated by hiding groups of symbols.

New orange-gold stars on the map now show the starting points of the most beautiful tours. If you are looking for tour suggestions, simply use the map and increase it slightly if necessary. The symbols are generally only displayed at a certain magnification level. If you tap on the symbol and then on the small speech bubble, a summary of the tour appears with the length, the stages, a short description and general information about navigability. There are currently around 300 paddling routes that are now shown on the map, and new ones are being added regularly.

Additional premium function for the PLUS Edition

The PLUS Edition receives another premium feature with version 2.5. Anyone who already has an Edition PLUS or has taken out a new subscription now automatically has access to the routes of the most beautiful tours. Simply open a tour on the map (new symbol) or from the list in the tours tab and touch the Show on map button at the bottom. Purchasing a tour also includes the detailed description, practical tips, a collection of links and photos as well as all updates.

The update of Canua to version 2.5.0 is now available for all users of the application to download free of charge in the German App Store. On average, Canua is rated with a good 4.3 out of 5 stars in the German App Store.
