Officer-involved shooting in Ohio

PROCTORVILLE A domestic violence suspect shot a police officer in the leg, and the officer then shot the suspect Saturday evening in Proctorville, Ohio, according to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.

Charles Eugene Martin II was taken to a local hospital and was in police custody after police shot him multiple times.

According to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, a woman said Martin was drunk and brandishing a firearm around 10:16 p.m

When officers arrived, the suspect shot a police officer in the leg. The deputy returned fire.

Officers surrounded the home and regained entry about two hours later to arrest the suspect, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment, according to the news release.

The deputy has also been receiving treatment since Saturday evening.

Martin is charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating.

Sheriff Jeff Lawless thanked deputies and local law enforcement partners for their “courageous and heroic efforts,” he said. “This very serious incident was concluded safely and effectively without further injury.”

Lawless thanked the Lawrence County Drug and Major Crime Task Force, Ironton Police Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol, South Point Police, Chesapeake Police, Coal Grove Police, Lawrence County EMS and Rome Township Fire Department for their assistance .
