Detroit, making a miracle run into the postseason, will look to continue its success into October behind Tarik Skubal, the odds-on favorite to win the AL Cy Young. Skubal led the league in wins (18), ERA (2.39) and strikeouts (228), becoming the first pitcher since 2011 to win the Triple Crown.

The 27-year-old Skubal will make his first playoff start in his career. It is the Tigers’ first time in the postseason since 2014.

On the other hand, Framber Valdez has plenty of postseason experience. Houston’s southpaw has made 16 playoff starts over the last four seasons, posting a 4.24 ERA. In the 2023 postseason, Valdez suffered a loss in each of his three starts.

But Valdez anchored Houston’s rotation in 2024 and ushered in the midseason turnaround as the Astros emerged from a 10-game hole to win the AL West. The left-hander posted a 2.91 ERA in 28 starts.
