JASPER COUNTY, Ind. (WLS) — A death investigation is underway at a home in Jasper County, Indiana.

The Jasper County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Coroner Andrew Boersma was called to a home in the 4200 block of Old Orchard Lane in Wheatfield on Monday.

Boersma declined to provide information about why he was called to the home, saying he did not expect any further information from his office until after 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The town of Wheatfield has fewer than 1,000 residents and the neighborhood in which this research is conducted is typically quiet. The neighbors are now faced with a mountain of unanswered questions.

“Honestly, just a shock. It’s a shock more than anything. It’s taking its toll on me today,” said neighbor Monica Prentice.

Prentice and his neighbor Michael Pittman said police arrived around mid-morning to a one-story home with a burn pit now surrounded by a maze of crime scene tape.

“Police are digging, investigating, that’s mostly all I’ve seen, the coroner’s office,” Pittman said. “They were digging on the side of the garage, and they were digging in the burn pit.”

“It’s pretty unusual. It’s pretty unusual. We have some bad things happening here, but not like this,” Prentice said.

Indiana State Police said they were assisting the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation, but neither agency provided details about the nature of the investigation.
