The topic of the day: Turnaround by Dayot Upamecano and Minjae Kim

On Saturday evening, when FC Bayern Munich and Bayer 04 Leverkusen met in the top game of the Bundesliga, there was actually only one direction in the second half with the score at 1:1: the record champions pushed the reigning champions into their half and played on the 2-1 winning goal.

But then there was a scene in Munich’s build-up game that could have changed everything. A look at the clock: Is it close to Upamecano again? The Frenchman received the ball, oriented himself forward and looked for a pass-off point. He couldn’t find it and so he came under pressure from his opponent.

The central defender wobbled briefly, then brought the ball across to a teammate. Take a deep breath from the FC Bayern fans. We have seen Upamecano make inexplicable mistakes often enough in the past. But here he got the corner.

It was the only scene in the entire game and in the past few weeks in which the national player appeared to wobble briefly. But he didn’t fall over. A good sign? It’s still too early to decide. The defender and Bayern have experienced too much together for that. But the interaction between him and Minjae Kim is working better and better these days.

FC Bayern with stronger development in defense

0.3 – 0.7 – 0.0 – 0.1 – these are the expected goals values that FC Bayern’s last four opponents got on the pitch. The majority of this came from a careless phase against Dinamo Zagreb at the start of the second half.

Kim and Upamecano, who both didn’t look good in the Bundesliga opener against VfL Wolfsburg and in the home game against SC Freiburg, can’t be said completely freely yet. Here and there you can still see little things in her game that need to be improved. Kim sometimes defends too quickly, while Upamecano likes to hold the ball a little too long, as in the scene against Leverkusen.

And yet the trend is simply positive. The way Upamecano gave the in-form Victor Boniface almost no chance to process Leverkusen’s long balls in a controlled manner left an impression. Kim, on the other hand, took excellent care of the few transition situations that the Werkself wanted to exploit using short passing games.

Or, to let Joshua Kimmich put it in a nutshell: “It’s brutal what the two of them have played in the last few weeks and what they’re ironing out.”

In Munich, people have been dreaming for years of finally having a bulwark that would lay the foundation for titles. Under Vincent Kompany the dream is alive more than ever. The Belgian seems to be tackling two things that have been neglected in recent years.

Vincent Kompany has stabilized FC Bayern so far

Firstly, he has so far managed very well to organize positional play in such a way that, even when he has a lot of possession, there is little impact defensively. In counter-pressing there is immediate pressure on the ball when it is lost. And secondly, he managed a good balance of offensive support and defensive protection in midfield.

Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović support each other and have a good harmony. If one goes forward, the other stays low. So far there are far fewer holes in the six-man area than in previous years. This helps Upamecano and Kim enormously. You will be taken last. Both can concentrate on themselves and their strengths.

Maybe this will really create the bulwark that FC Bayern longs for. The coming opponents are revealed, how big the proportions of dream and reality are.

Miasanrot is a project that I manage alongside my job as a sports journalist. My ambitious goal is to provide you with formats like this and analyzes about FC Bayern every day. In order to be able to implement this, I have to reduce my work for other media – which means less effort. It is up to you how regularly this format and other in-depth analyzes as well as the podcast can appear. There will be days when the round-up has to be suspended and there will be no other content. The more revenue Miasanrot has, the less likely these irregularities are. We want to consciously approach reporting differently. Away from speed, tabloids and changeability – towards quality and continuity. We need you for that. You can find all the information about how you can support us and why you should do so here.

FC Bayern, News: FCB boss praises Minjae Kim and Dayot Upamecano

Vincent Kompany didn’t let the wild start to the season in Wolfsburg drive him crazy. The FC Bayern coach continued to rely on his preferred duo in central defense: Minjae Kim and Dayot Upamecano. They pay him back with ever better services.

The coach “bet on his favorite pair even against public opinion,” said Jan-Christian Dreesen AZ: “And you can see that they are developing more and more joy in playing and working together.” Both of them “played an excellent game” against Leverkusen, said the FCB CEO.

That’s why he said he was “happy for both of them” because: “They both came under criticism last season, and they certainly didn’t show their best performance in one game or another.” Eric Dier was Not a factor yet and returnee Hiroki Ito will probably have a hard time getting into the starting line-up.

FC Bayern: Will the DFB take action? Sven Ulreich insults Simon Rolfes

Men’s soccer is a simple game: 22 men chase a ball and sometimes insult each other. This time an insult was made public. And not from one of the 22 players on the field, but from Sven Ulreich, who was upset about Leverkusen’s time play.

Video evidence on social media convicted FC Bayern’s substitute goalkeeper. “Zeitspiel,” can be heard loudly at first, then Ulreich comes into the picture, having risen from the bench. He shouts loudly in the direction of the Leverkusen bench: “Hey, stop it over there, you bum!” Hey! Hey! Sit down, Rolfes, you wanker!”

The audience loved it, as you could see from the video. The DFB shows less. According to the dpa The control committee is currently looking at the scene. However, it is unclear whether there is an official investigation. Especially since both sides have already reacted and stopped adding fuel to the fire. FC Bayern, for example, said that Ulreich apologized for his choice of words.

In the end, a lot of fuss about nothing? At the moment it’s time to go. But if the DFB finds out, Ulreich will probably face a maximum of a fine. Like in 2015, when Kevin De Bruyne paid €20,000 for calling a ball boy a “motherfucker”.

Paul Wanner talks about returning to FC Bayern

Paul Wanner spoke in an interview with Kicker expressed about his future. “He notices that my development is important to FC Bayern,” said the offensive player, who is currently on loan from Heidenheim. However, he will only consider returning “if I am on the shortlist.” Otherwise I would be back at the point where I was before.”

Currently, the coming summer is still a long way away for both parties. However, a permanent transfer is currently out of the question for both Wanner and FC Bayern. The plan is to wait and see how the season progresses and hold discussions in the second half of the season. Then it will be clearer to both Wanner and the FCB whether to tackle the first professional season or give the 18-year-old another loan.

The competition at FC Bayern is enormous. Nevertheless, it is still unclear for some attackers whether they will wear the Munich jersey beyond the summer of 2025. There were already concrete rumors in the past transfer window that they would have liked to part ways with Serge Gnabry and/or Kingsley Coman. Both recently talked about it.

When does FCB still have a contract valid until 2027? In seven appearances for Heidenheim he currently has four goals and two assists.

A quick overview: What else is going on at FC Bayern?

  • Hiroki Ito completed another running session on Monday. It is still unclear when the Japanese will return to team training.
  • Konrad Laimer was nominated for the Austrian national team.
  • Romanian Radu Petrescu will take charge of Bayern’s Champions League game at Aston Villa. So far he has never refereed an FCB game.
  • The conference with Vincent Kompany and a player will take place at 8:30 p.m. It is still unclear who that will be.

Looking outside the box: Bayern scare Emery? “We can hurt the best.”

Aston Villa will go into the game against FC Bayern confident despite the 2-2 draw against Ipswich at the weekend. “We are in capable hands with our coach,” explained attacker Ollie Watkins in an interview with UEFA: “He has experienced Champions League football at the highest level, whenever he unpacks a match plan, we trust him.”

He implemented a style that the whole team follows. “We are confident that if we play to the best of our abilities, we can hurt the best,” Watkins continued: “We will just enjoy the experience and work hard to beat the teams in front of us.”

Emery has an excellent record against FC Bayern so far. In four meetings, the coach won two, drew one and only lost once. With Paris Saint-Germain he won 3-0 in the 2017 group stage and then lost 3-1. He probably remembers the duel in 2022 even better, when he knocked Munich out of the competition with FC Villarreal in the quarter-finals.
