An arson investigation is underway following a fire in a new children’s playground.

Firefighters found a burning wooden structure in Pulley Park in King’s Hedges, Cambridge, at around 7pm BST on Sunday.

Cambridgeshire Police confirmed no one was injured and said CCTV footage was being reviewed.

A local councilor said tens of thousands of pounds had been spent improving the play area and described the incident as “shocking”.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service spent about two hours dealing with the incident.

“Firefighters arrived and located a fire involving a wooden structure in the pulley play area,” the service said in a statement.

“Using breathing apparatus, they extinguished the fire with a hose reel.

“The cause of the fire was deliberate.”
