Apple has officially removed the Beddit sleep monitoring apps for models 3.0 and 3.5 from the App Store. This reflects the ongoing decline of Beddit accessories, which have seen a gradual decline in hardware and software support since Apple acquired them in 2017.

Farewell to Beddit

Since acquiring Beddit, Apple released a new Beddit sleep monitor 3.5 towards the end of 2018, which featured a handful of minor changes to the product. However, other than that, Apple hasn’t paid much attention to the Beddit brand – both in terms of hardware and software.

In fact, many of the changes Apple has made to Beddit have focused on removing features. The app lost its cloud sync feature in 2018, while Beddit Sleep Monitor 3.5 lost support for Android as well as at least eight other features that were included in Beddit 3.0. In 2022, Apple completely discontinued the Beddit hardware line.

The sensor strip that is placed on the mattress to monitor sleep was once a promising product in the sleep technology market. However, Apple’s acquisition of Beddit is likely to improve sleep tracking features on the Apple Watch.

Sleep monitoring with the Apple Watch

When it comes to sleep monitoring, Apple’s focus is undoubtedly on the Apple Watch. To do this, the company likely leveraged Beddit’s talent, technology, and intellectual property to bring improvements to the Apple Watch.

For years, the Apple Watch relied solely on third-party apps for sleep monitoring, but with watchOS 7, Apple added native support for sleep monitoring. The Apple Watch received the highlight so far with the new detection of sleep apnea. This was introduced with the release of watchOS 11 for the Apple Watch Series 10, Series 9 and Ultra 2.

Sleep apnea detection is designed to help users identify potential sleep-related breathing problems, improving their sleep quality and overall health awareness. The feature includes two main components: a nighttime measurement of respiratory disorders and a notification system. If elevated breathing disorder levels are detected over a 30-day period, the user will receive an alert indicating possible signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea.
