Roland Garros attacked by burglars again after players’ changing rooms attacked | Tennis | sport

Roland Garros was attacked by burglars, prompting the French Tennis Federation to file an official complaint about the incident. The complex is one of the most prestigious tennis venues in the world and hosted the Tennis Olympics in the summer, following the French Open weeks earlier.

There are 20 courts at the Roland Garros site in Paris, including the Court Philippe Chatrier, which hosts the showpiece French Open matches.

The destination also includes offices, a museum and a large restaurant and bar area, as well as housing the country’s national training center.

According to the French news agency AFP, a group of burglars broke into the Roland Garros grounds on Thursday night.

They ransacked offices and stole branded items, including high-quality bracelets. And the stolen items are said to be worth almost £25,000.

An investigation has already been launched and a spokesman for the French Tennis Federation said: “We have opened an investigation and lodged a complaint.”

The security of Roland Garros is already at risk after players and coaches were reportedly attacked in the main locker room during the 2018 edition of the tournament.

At the time, the largest Spanish-language newspaper in the United States, La Opinion, reported that some suspicions pointed directly to a former French tennis player, but the victims did not dare to accuse him because they had no reliable evidence.

Fabio Fognini’s coach Franco Davin was stolen from the main dressing room on the third day of the tournament while the player was in action against Pablo Anduja. Davin lost money and his passport, and there were also sporting goods in his bag.

CCTV footage showed a person leaving the locker room with a bag identical to the one taken from Davin. And the coach told Argentine magazine La Nacion: “We all know each other there. It was crazy to think something like that could happen.”

He added: “They told me no one knew him. I asked them to study the other chambers so they could follow their path, but they didn’t. There is suspicion that this is the thief as no one could tell me who he was.

“Besides, we wear the brand of the thug or the clothing that sponsored us, there is no big secret, and this person had clothing of a different brand.” The robbery was under investigation. But no one takes responsibility.

“There was a lot of concern in the dressing room. Rafa [Nadal], [David] Goffin, [Richard] Gasquet, [Dominic] Thiem, Juan [Del Potro] asked me every time they saw me and they couldn’t believe it. [Novak] Djokovic, same thing. From then on they all continued walking without letting go of their bags. It’s a mess.”
