The city has fewer than a thousand inhabitants. Authorities are providing very little information, but Indiana State Police said they have joined the investigation.

The neighbors were unsettled and said that the police had arrived in the one-story house around mid-morning with a fire pit. However, investigators provided little information about the nature of the investigation.

“It’s pretty unusual. It’s pretty unusual. We have some bad things happening here, but not like this,” Prentice said. “The things I saw and heard today are no different than anything I have seen or heard before.”

“Police are digging, investigating, that’s basically all I’ve seen, the coroner’s office,” said neighbor Michael Pittman. “They were digging on the side of the garage, and they were digging in the burn pit.”

Neighbors said the apartment examined was a rental property. The youngest tenant, who has only been there a few months, told neighbors he was not involved in the investigation.
