Earth’s magnetic field – BER renames runways – Economy

Schönefeld (dpa/bb) – The runways of the capital’s BER airport are getting new names. Specifically, it is about the “names for the runway identifiers necessary for navigation,” the airport said. According to BER information, the reason for the renaming is the movement of the earth’s magnetic field.

Accordingly, all runways in international air traffic are aligned with the compass rose. The exact degrees result from the angle of the respective orbit in relation to the geomagnetic north pole. If the deviation due to the movement of the magnetic field becomes too large, the names must be changed.

The time has now come at the capital airport: From Thursday, the northern runway 25R/07L will become 24R/06L and the southern runway 07R/25L will become 06R/24L. The marking of the runways and the replacement of signs have been underway for days.

According to the airport, there will be no changes to the arrival and departure routes. The colloquial terms Northern and Southern Railway are retained.
