Drivers must wash car in October or lose £1,200

The diesel particulate filter repair and replacement service DPF Experts has advised drivers that spending a few minutes with a bucket and sponge can help drivers save a fortune this October.

While the average cost of petrol and diesel is continuing to fall across the UK, fears that fuel duty may be increased are causing many drivers to look for ways to make their vehicle more efficient.

To help drivers save money on their fuel bills, DPF Experts recommended that all drivers keep the bodywork of their car clean.

They explained: “A dirty car doesn’t just look bad—it can also affect your fuel efficiency.

“Cleaning your car makes it more aerodynamic, reducing drag and allowing for better fuel economy which can result in up to £200 a year in fuel savings.”

During the autumn months, the unpleasant weather can leave roads wet and covered in mud, meaning cars often get dirtier at a much faster rate.

While this can lead to vehicles looking unappealing, excess dirt on the bodywork can also make a car less aerodynamic, meaning the engine needs to work slightly harder to keep up with traffic.

As a result, drivers who regularly wash their vehicle are able to save up to £200 on their fuel bills, and have a shiny-looking car in the process.

However, in addition to boosting fuel economy, DPF Experts also highlighted that cleaning their car regularly can also protect drivers from a hefty fine.

They added: “Keeping your windscreen and number plate clean is also essential, as failing to do so could lead to fines of up to £1,000.”

By leaving a car dirty, drivers may struggle to get a sufficient view of their surroundings, increasing the risk of causing a serious accident.

When cleaning a car during the autumn months it is important that drivers choose a mild day with no rain or frost planned, prioritizing late morning or early afternoon to give themselves plenty of daylight.

Motorists should start by pre-rinsing their vehicle with a hose pipe or pressure washer, which can loosen any debris, and then apply a quality soap designed to be used on vehicles.

Many car cleaning experts recommend that drivers begin by washing the top of the car and working downwards to prevent getting the water dirty too quickly, and use two buckets (one with soapy water and the other with clean water) to prevent contamination.
