Video of former sheriff allegedly killing judge shown in court

MORGAN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT/Gray News) – Video of a former sheriff allegedly shooting and killing a judge was shown in court Tuesday.

Former Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines is charged with the murder of Judge Kevin Mullins in Kentucky.

Defense attorneys said Stines was experiencing “extreme emotional disturbance” at the time of the shooting.

Stines has pleaded not guilty.

During Tuesday’s court hearing, a prosecutor showed video of the shooting, showing Mullins being shot multiple times and falling behind his desk in his chambers.

The video in court only played for about 20 seconds, but Kentucky State Police said the full recording of their interaction was longer.

As the video was shown, people could be heard sobbing in the courtroom.

A detective testified that Stines was the shooter. The detective said after the shooting, Stines appeared calm and said, “Treat me fairly.”

During cross-examination, the detective also testified that Stines tried to call his daughter from his and Mullins’ phones.

The case will now be sent to a grand jury.
