On Wednesday night Vice presidential candidates JD Vance and Tim Walz dueled in New York – and struck an unusually gentle tone. Suddenly there were handshakes before and after the duel as a matter of course, they let each other finish, showed understanding and compassion – and in between they even found little things in common.

What was going on with the usually attacking JD Vance? And what about the otherwise so laid-back Tim Walz? Who was able to win more votes in crucial swing states in the debate? And what impact will this debate ultimately have?

Possible “October surprise”

The election takes place at the beginning of November, although in US election years there are always explosive leaks or events in the October before the election that could again have a major impact on the result. Since 1980, people have been talking about the “October Surprise” in election years. Are we facing this short period of time? What surprises would be conceivable? And what would it mean?
