Uttar Pradesh: Infant dies in Mainpuri after nurse demands Rs 5,100 tip to hand over baby to family

Uttar Pradesh: Infant dies in Mainpuri after nurse demands Rs 5,100 tip to hand over baby to family

A family in Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh has alleged that their newborn baby died because a nurse refused to hand over the baby until next year ‘negative’ (a common tip) was given.

Sujeet, a resident of Onha Patara village in Kurra region, took his pregnant wife Sanjali to Karhal Community Health Center (CHC) in Mainpuri on September 18.

Sanjali gave birth to a baby boy in the early morning of September 19. According to the family, nurse Jyoti Bhadauria allegedly demanded Rs 5,100 as a tip.

When the family was unable to pay, the nurse allegedly placed the newborn on a table in the delivery room and refused to hand over the baby until payment was made.

Unable to settle the money immediately, the family had to leave the baby unattended on the table for about 40 minutes.

Sujeet ended up borrowing money from his brother and the nurse was paid. By this time, the baby’s condition had deteriorated and after the family notified the staff, the newborn was rushed to Saifai Medical College. However, the baby died.

After the incident, Sujeet filed a complaint and accused the hospital staff of negligence.

The matter reached higher authorities and UP Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak took cognizance of the incident.

District magistrate Anjani Kumar ordered a detailed probe and directed the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Mainpuri to form a three-member probe team.

Meanwhile, Jyoti was immediately removed from her post until the investigation was completed.

“We have taken note of the matter. A newborn died due to the nurse’s inhumane behavior. “The authorities are committed to ensuring justice is served to the family and legal action will be taken against the person responsible,” an official said.
