Start of the Euroleague – start coup in the new hall: Bayern basketball players beat Real – Bayern

Munich (dpa) – FC Bayern’s basketball players started the new Euroleague season with a win and immediately provided a sporting highlight when they moved into their new hall. Coach Gordon Herbert’s team defeated title favorites Real Madrid thanks to a comeback with 97:89 (52:51). The Munich team is thus underlining their ambitions in the European premier class after the previous season was very disappointing.

New signing Shabazz Napier with 25 points and world champion Johannes Voigtmann, who was also newly signed in the summer, with 19 points were the home team’s outstanding players and best throwers. Facundo Campazzo collected 19 points for the Spaniards.

Grandstand not quite finished yet

With a small ceremony before the start of the game, the Munich team opened the SAP Garden as the new Euroleague venue – even if there was a small downer and some of the indoor stands were not yet completely finished.

In addition to managing director Marko Pesic, president Herbert Hainer and honorary president Uli Hoeneß, as long-time basketball supporters and drivers of the hall project, are still proud for the cameras. A number of guests of honor among the 11,500 spectators, including Munich national soccer players Joshua Kimmich and Serge Gnabry, did not miss the party in the Olympic Park.

And they got their money’s worth: Bayern largely kept the favorites at bay in the first two entertaining quarters. Thanks, among other things, to the long-range throws from Voigtmann and Napier, the Munich team pulled ahead by eleven points. The three-time Euroleague champion and last year’s finalist from Madrid is experienced and couldn’t be left behind more clearly. At halftime it was 52:51 for Bayern.

Impressive finish

Because the Munich team botched the start in the second half and allowed Real to go on a 13-point run, the situation became more complicated for Herbert’s team. But even a ten-point deficit does not mean the preliminary decision – on the contrary: Bayern really hold up in the finish and turn the party around with loud cheers.
