Vance has been very specific about abortion

Senator JD Vance (R-OH) has shown serious political savvy by expressing his presidential candidate’s pro-abortion stance.

When Vance responded to abortion policy during the vice presidential debate, he answered the question expertly. He noted that the Republican Party must truly earn trust by being “pro-family in the truest sense of the word,” protecting innocent lives while supporting women and families in various policy areas. He also said that “Donald Trump has made it very clear” that the most sensible way to deal with abortion regulation is to leave it to state-level votes.

It was clear that despite poll pressure and a mercurial candidate running, Vance was not capitulating to calls for abortion. Still, advocates like LiveAction founder Lila Rose have denounced what they see as Vance’s support for abortion:

It’s one thing to be disappointed that Vance has chosen to play along with the political system — conservatives can disagree about the method. It’s quite another thing to say he’s “now defending abortion.” The claim is untrue, not to mention that they lack political tact.

Vance was careful to toe the line without betraying his faith. Word choice is a powerful tool, and Vance uses it. On the issue of abortion, he particularly expressed the political vision of former President Donald Trump. If he disagrees with Trump’s opinion on the matter, all Vance had to do was defend federalism. Given the reversal of Roe v. Wadethe power is already in the hands of the states – Vance doesn’t need to push to protect a non-existent federal ban to maintain a pro-life position. With the existing structure, he can still carry out useful work for the time being.

Vance was even attentive to details as minute as the phrase “fertility treatments” versus “in vitro fertilization.” “I want us to support fertility treatments,” he said in the debate. For Catholics and abortion advocates paying attention to key words, the distinction is crucial. There are fertility treatments approved by the Catholic Church, which Vance certainly had in mind.

It’s suboptimal for Vance to have to be so selective about a truth he believes in, but that’s the political reality. It is also unrealistic to grant the national ban a complete moral imperative: politics is a false hope.

The most effective way to save babies’ lives right now is to limit the number of those killed as a result of Vice President Kamala Harris’s unlimited abortion policies. Rose can vote for a true pro-life candidate, but there’s little chance he’ll win. The problem is not with her beliefs, but with her baseless denigration of Vance.
