Schenectady man convicted in Albany shooting

According to the Albany County District Attorney’s Office, 24-year-old Deonte Dent of Schenectady was sentenced to a final sentence of 12 years in state prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder.

Dent was also sentenced to five years of post-release supervision, the DA’s office said.

Dent pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree murder on August 15, satisfying a four-count indictment in full.

According to the prosecutor, the indictment also included two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and one count of first-degree promoting prison contraband.

In the plea, the DA’s office says Dent admitted that on or about September 10, 2023, while he was in the area of Quail Street and Bradford Street in Albany, he attempted to cause the death of another person by shooting the victim with a handgun.

Judge McDonough of the Albany County Superior Court issued the following statement:

“The court is obviously concerned about the fact that even after admitting guilt, even after understanding that you are facing a sentence of only eight or even 12 sentences, you respond to probation by saying, ‘Things happen.’ Given the defendant’s cavalier reaction to shoot someone and hit someone, I sentence the defendant to 12 years in prison.”
