Live updates: Trump-Harris election news, campaign events

It is the final month of the 2024 presidential election, an affair that has seemed crazy for months.

Americans saw the incumbent Democratic president drop out of the race, the Republican nominee narrowly avoid assassination, and the first woman of color rise to the national level.

Where do the candidates spend money?

Money isn’t everything in politics, but it’s certainly not nothing. Where campaigns — and the super PACs that support them — spend their money is, if nothing else, a good indicator of where they see opportunities.

CNN’s David Wright, who tracks spending, noted how the Harris campaign focused its spending on the critical blue wall states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin in the first week of October. Trump has his eyes on the Sun Belt but also spent the most money on advertising in Pennsylvania, proving he is a linchpin for both sides’ strategies.

The policy proposals have been implemented and the candidates have tried to define each other. Now is the time to get voters to the ballot box or mailbox.

Much of the country is already voting early and by mail, although early voting is not expected to reach the same levels as in the Covid-19 pandemic-related elections in 2020. Trump remains a skeptic of mail-in voting , but Republicans are OK with the practice, which was introduced in key states this year to keep pace with Democrats.

Harris has supporters on the left and supporters on the right, from popular high-profile Democrats like former President Barack Obama to disaffected anti-Trump Republicans like former Rep. Liz Cheney.

Trump will receive significant support from the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, but will overall have fewer surrogates to turn to.
