Members of the Pittsburgh Steelers may want to get their passports in order.

As the NFL looks to expand its International Series, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday that the Steelers are “a prime candidate to be featured” when the league plays its first game in Dublin, Ireland.

The Steelers, owned by the Rooneys for nearly a century with deep Irish ties, are a fixture for the NFL’s first game in Dublin.

Henry Hodgson, the general manager of the league’s UK office, told the Associated Press: Ken Maguire In May, the league considered Dublin as a venue for the International Series.

“There is a feasibility study, as we would call it, in a number of different European cities and Dublin is one of them,” Hodgson said. “We look at the stadiums, attend local meetings… we take all that information, digest it and determine what the next steps are.”

“It happens in Dublin, it happens in Paris for example and also in a number of other cities around the world.”

The Rooney family’s roots go back to Northern Ireland and the connection has remained strong long after the Rooneys settled in Pittsburgh.

“This blue-collar approach, started by my great-grandfather, was carried on by my grandfather Dan Rooney, fondly remembered by many in this room today,” Daniel Rooney said at a press conference in 2023. “Ireland was particular in life an important part of my grandfather. The pride he had in his Irish heritage led him to co-found the Ireland Funds. My family and the Steelers organization continue to support the funds and the pillars they stand for…peace, culture and charity.”

Future team chairman Dan Rooney isn’t giving much away, but he definitely has some exciting projects up his sleeve to expand the Steelers’ presence here.

The comments came as NFL granted the Steelers with marketing rights in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The franchise has already taken part in a game on Irish soil. Pittsburgh faced the Chicago Bears in the 1997 preseason. Now it seems only a matter of time before the Steelers come back.
