KÜS Trend-Tacho: Owning a car remains important

KÜS Trend-Tacho: Owning a car remains important

The trend speedometer is created for the testing organization KÜS and the specialist magazine kfz-betrieb by the Cologne institute BBE Automotive GmbH. It is a mixed-mode survey, conducted by telephone (CATI) of 300 people and online (CAWI) of 700 people. The target persons are car drivers who are jointly responsible for questions about the car in the household. The survey was conducted in August 2024. The survey results are weighted using the KBA data (shares of car brands, age segments).

There is local public transport (ÖPNV), which offers various means of transport such as S-Bahn, subway and bus, especially in large cities. There is that Car sharing concept: Several people share a car. There is also a wide range of electrically powered two-wheelers (e-bikes and e-scooters), to name just three of these alternatives.

Nevertheless, owning a car is very important for most drivers in Germany. This is proven by the current KÜS trend speedometer. 40% of respondents think it is “extremely important,” 32% say it is “very important,” and 20% say it is “important.” Car ownership is particularly important for frequent drivers (54%) and in rural areas (43%). Only 7% call this form of mobility “less important” and just 1% find owning a car “unimportant”.

Having your own car is particularly important because you can get to your destination in a short amount of time

80% of those surveyed stated this as a priority. When it comes to mobility, 71% of those surveyed see smartphones as indispensable in the future. The number of respondents who would like to see measures to relieve traffic is just as high: 70% see bicycle tunnels and highways as helpful. Those surveyed in the KÜS Trend-Tacho are more critical of the current trend in traffic planning to “ban” cars from city centers: 61% reject this, only 39% support such concepts. The drivers surveyed are similarly critical of self-driving vehicles – both now and explicitly with a view to the future: 33% favor such a vehicle, 67% are not considering it.

“Many people see numerous advantages in owning their own car, especially of a practical nature. The current KÜS trend speedometer clearly proves this. The regular general inspection (HU) by the KÜS test engineers continues to be an important contribution to the safety of all road users. This will also apply in the future, when assistance systems, the various levels of automated driving and numerous apps will noticeably change individual mobility compared to today,” emphasizes KÜS Managing Director Peter Schuler.
