Worries about Michigan State football are growing

Michigan State is reeling after losing its third straight game. After a good start to the season, the Spartans came back down to earth against Boston College and haven’t had much success since.

CBS Sports’ Cameron Salerno listed some of his takeaways from Michigan State’s third straight loss.

Salerno noted that Michigan State’s schedule will only get more difficult. After their bye week, the Spartans still face several tough opponents. Salerno expects Michigan State to have difficult games over the next few weeks, which will put pressure on the Spartans to win games on the back end of their schedule.

“After starting the season 3-0 in the first year of the Jonathan Smith era, the Spartans have lost their last three games to Boston College, Ohio State and Oregon,” Salerno said. “The schedule doesn’t get any easier for MSU as its next four games are against Iowa at home, No. 10 Michigan, No. 23 Indiana and No. 24 Illinois. In the end, the schedule relaxes with home games against Purdue and Rutgers, but the Spartans will likely need to pull off at least one upset to break a two-year bowl drought.”

While Michigan State had an overall disappointing night, Salerno noted that Michigan State became the first team in nine quarters to score an offensive touchdown over the Ducks.

“Spartans running back Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams reached the end zone on a 1-yard run with 8:27 to play,” Salerno said. “The score ended a streak of nine straight quarters without the Ducks scoring an offensive touchdown and dates back to the second quarter of their 49-14 victory over Oregon State.”

Salerno noted that Michigan State hoped to run the ball successfully behind an experienced offensive line this season. However, that hasn’t been the case for the Spartans in recent weeks as their offense has been subpar this season.

“Michigan State entered the season hoping to have a salty, experienced front seven,” Salerno said. “But that hasn’t been the case so far. The Spartans have been outscored 400-106 in their last two games. The Spartans were defeated on the ground by Ohio State 185-47 last week. The Spartans have committed 14 turnovers this season, tied with Auburn for the most turnovers in the FBS.”
