Ange Postecoglou lashes out at complacent Tottenham players after the “worst result” of his tenure

Ange Postecoglou lashes out at complacent Tottenham players after the “worst result” of his tenure

Ange Postecoglou was furious as his Tottenham side squandered a 2-0 half-time lead to lose 3-2 in the Premier League at Brighton on Sunday.

Spurs appeared to be on their way to their sixth straight win in all competitions as they deservedly led 2-0 after 37 minutes but collapsed in the second half, leaving Postecoglou seething.

Brennan Johnson opened the scoring with his sixth goal in six games before James Maddison scored the decisive goal in a first half dominated by the visitors.

But Brighton hit back after the break with goals from Yankuba Minteh, Georginio Rutter and Danny Welbeck to take all three points on the south coast and leave Tottenham manager Postecoglou stunned.

And after the game, the dejected Australian said: Sky Sports: “Disappointing. I’m frustrated and absolutely disappointed by this. Worst defeat since I’ve been here. Unacceptable second half. Not nearly where we should be. We were carried away by the way we were feeling.

“We kind of accepted our fate and it’s hard to understand because we didn’t do that while I was here. We have paid the price. The problem is that we are moving too smoothly. Football and life will get in the way if you get too far ahead.”

On message to players: “There is no message. It is a terrible loss for us – as bad as it may be. There is only one way to fix this and it is my responsibility.

“We lost all our duels and if you’re not competitive it won’t work – we weren’t competitive. They’re all on international duty, most of them. They’ll edit it individually and I’ll edit it when everyone gets back.”

Maddison is devastated by Tottenham collapse

The result marked the 10th time Tottenham have lost a Premier League game in which they were leading by two or more goals, meaning they become the first club to reach double figures. Reaching this mark is also at least three times more than any other team in the history of the competition.

And after the game, James Maddison admitted: “We couldn’t deal with the shift in momentum. We lost control of the game when the first goal was scored. We handled the momentum poorly and couldn’t control the game – it felt like one attack after another.

“They are a good team and have good players. Adversity in the Premier League – you have to stay strong and weather the storm – we definitely couldn’t do that.

“We had a good run, but today it feels like we took a few steps back.

“We said the right things to avoid becoming complacent, but words mean nothing if you don’t show it.”
