With the counting of votes in the 90-member Haryana parliamentary constituency set to take place tomorrow, the political arena in the state is full of fervor and anticipation.

While the election polls have predicted a bleak picture for the BJP and a resounding victory for the Congress after a decade-long drought, anticipation over the state’s fate will ultimately decide the results of the general elections to be announced by the Election Commission of India.

Furthermore, before we delve into the 2024 Haryana Assembly election results, let us also take a brief look at the election dates, what happened in 2014 and 2019, and details about when and where to watch the results.

About the Haryana Assembly Elections

The state witnessed single-phase polling in 90 constituencies on October 5 with the overall voter turnout standing at 61.19% till 7 pm.

It is important to note that elections in Haryana were initially scheduled for October 1, along with the second phase of elections in Jammu and Kashmir. However, following the Election Commission of India’s announcement, it was later postponed to October 5. The ECI in its order had noted that it had received representations from national and state political parties as well as the All India Bishnoi Mahasabha demanding postponement of the election date as a large number of people from the Bishnoi community would be present in Haryana Rajasthan to participate in the centuries-old celebration of Asoj Amavasya festival and this will impact the voting percentage.

Haryana Assembly Elections: What happened in 2014 and 2019?

It is important to note that the 2019 and 2014 polls represent important points for the BJP. While the BJP formed the government in a coalition with the JJP in 2019, it achieved an absolute victory in 2014.

Results 2019: The Haryana Assembly elections ended in a hung assembly with no party securing a majority. The BJP won 40 seats in the 90-member Haryana Assembly, where the majority stands at 46, while the Congress won 31 seats. However, Jat leader Dushyant Chautala’s Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), which emerged as kingmaker, secured 10 seats, formed a coalition with the BJP and staked its claim to the state. On October 27, Manohar Lal Khattar was sworn in as Chief Minister of Haryana, with Dushyant Chautala taking the oath as Khattar’s deputy.

While everything seemed to be going smoothly between the BJP and the JJP in Haryana, their alliance reached a crucial breaking point in early 2024, leading to the collapse of the coalition. The sudden political upheaval in the state prompted then chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar and all 13 members of the BJP-led council of ministers to submit their resignations. Nayab Singh Saini was then sworn in as the new Prime Minister with the support of 48 MPs.

In the 90-member Haryana Assembly, the BJP holds 41 seats and also enjoys the support of six of the seven independent MPs and the Haryana Lokhit Party’s lone MP, Gopal Kanda.

Results 2014: Meanwhile, the 2014 Haryana assembly elections were held in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s landslide victory in the Lok Sabha elections. The Modi government’s strong mandate was reflected in many states as the BJP won them one after another. Haryana was one of them. The BJP, which had only four seats before 2014, won 47 seats in the elections and formed the government under the new face Manohar Lal Khattar.

The BJP got 41,25,285 votes (33.20 percent) while the Congress got 25,57,940 votes (20.58 percent). Among other prominent parties, INLD received 29,96,203 votes (24.11 percent).
