A YouTuber with 11 million subscribers just unboxed the M4 MacBook Pro

The leaks about the yet-to-be-announced M4 MacBook Pro have been getting stranger and stranger lately. It was initially for sale on Facebook. And now, as MacRumors has discovered, there appears to be a full unboxing video of it on YouTube.

Even stranger, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman retweeted Russian YouTuber Wylsacom’s video with the comment: “Unconfirmed, but looks pretty legit.” This isn’t an unknown YouTube channel either. He currently has 11.3 million subscribers.

It should be noted here that Apple has never had a leak of this magnitude. If true, it’s a finished product that gets into a consumer’s hands before it’s even been announced.

How it ended up in the hands of this particular consumer – who knows. Apple doesn’t currently do business in Russia and the packaging is in English, so it must have come from somewhere else. Maybe that YouTuber really bought it from that private Facebook group. But even if that were the case, importing the laptop into Russia would be a whole other problem that they would have had to work around.

The main problem with the other leaks is here too – the box still has the M3 wallpaper on it, making it almost look like someone just changed the text on the bottom of a normal M3 box. As mentioned, Apple is constantly changing its wallpapers.

But let’s say we assume this leak is real – here’s what the video suggests about the next MacBook Pro update:

  • It could potentially come with at least 16GB of RAM as the rumors suggest (or it could be a made-to-order model).
  • According to the bottom of the box, it could have three Thunderbolt 4 ports. The YouTuber did not show the ports in the video. In the previous generation, only the M3 Pro and M3 Max versions had three Thunderbolt ports.
  • The color shown is Space Black, which is currently only available on M3 Pro or M3 Max configurations, suggesting it could also be available on base chip configurations.
  • According to the Geekbench 6 benchmark shared by the YouTube channel, the M4 chip can deliver up to 25% faster performance than the M3 chip.

That means if the leak is real, Apple has changed the minimum amount of RAM, the number of Thunderbolt ports, and the color palette for the base model.

Alternatively, we’re just dealing with an M3 Pro or M3 Max MacBook Pro whose packaging has been tampered with. It is impossible to say for sure whether it is a fake or not, but if not, there must be big problems in the Apple offices at the moment.
