Beatriz Haddad Maia was pleased with an opening win in Wuhan.

Beatriz Haddad Maia won in two sets against Madison Keys, but had to invest a lot, especially in the first set, to achieve success against the American. The result for the twelfth place in the world rankings was 9-7 in the tiebreak after 65 minutes on the court.

Both players also had numerous break chances in the second set. The crux of the matter was the seventh game of the second round, which the Brazilian was able to get through after fending off five breakballs, making it 5-2. The final score after 2:10 hours was 7:6(7), 6:2 for Haddad Maia, who will meet Marie Bouzkova or Veronika Kudermetova in round two.

Vekic turns match against Mertens

Donna Vekic, currently ranked 18th in the WTA, prevailed after being down one set against Elise Mertens, who was twelve places lower, 3:6, 6:1, 6:3. The Croatian can now look forward to Yulia Putintseva or Shuai Zhang.

Leylah Fernandez was also able to celebrate at the end after falling behind against Diana Shnaider. The Russian won the tiebreak of the first set, but was left behind 7:6(7), 3:6, 3:6 against a better-performing Fernandez.
