Hurricane Milton, expected in Florida, is also hitting the region’s sports teams and forcing some to flee the US state. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers from the American football league NFL said they wanted to move to New Orleans on Tuesday in order to prepare for the next game next Sunday at the Saints.

“Extremely serious” threat to Florida

“Milton,” which has now reached the highest Category 5, is expected to make landfall on the west coast of Florida on Wednesday. The storm poses an “extremely serious” threat to Florida and is life-threatening, authorities said.

The NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning ice hockey team had to cancel its preseason game against the Nashville Predators on Monday evening. The game had previously been postponed due to Hurricane Helene, which caused extensive damage in the region two weeks ago.

The Lightning open the regular season on Friday at Carolina. It is still unclear whether the team will move to North Carolina beforehand. The NBA’s Orlando Magic are on the road this week and will play in San Antonio on Wednesday.

College sports are also affected: The University of Central Florida in Orlando announced that all home games on Wednesday and Thursday have been canceled. That includes the volleyball game against Colorado on Wednesday and the women’s soccer game against Arizona on Thursday. The first day of the ITA Southeast Regionals tennis tournament on Thursday was also canceled.
