After 35 years, the fatal shooting case was reopened

Detectives have reopened a murder investigation 35 years after the fatal shooting of a man in Southampton.

Richard Haywood, known as Ricky, was killed in his apartment above Ambiance Jewelers on Shirley Road in October 1989.

Hampshire Constabulary said it was examining the evidence taking into account advances in forensic science.

In a statement, Mr Haywood’s sister said she hoped for “justice and closure”.

So far no one has been charged with murder.

Det Insp Elizabeth Brunt renewed an appeal for information about his death.

“I think someone knows why Ricky was killed and who was responsible. Whatever your loyalties, you would be doing the right thing by telling us what you know.”

We must give his family the answers they rightly deserve in order to achieve justice for them and Ricky.

“Your help is needed and now is the time to share your knowledge directly, anonymously or through third parties – doing nothing is no longer an option.”

The charity Crimestoppers said it was offering a reward of up to £20,000 for information leading solely to the arrest, charge and conviction of those responsible for the murder.

In 2004, Mr Haywood’s mother, Phyllis, offered a £100,000 reward but died without anyone being convicted of her son’s murder.

In a statement issued by police, Mr Haywood’s sister said his death continued to have a “huge impact” on the family.

“The pain never goes away. My mother was never at peace and it slowly consumed her, she went to her grave not knowing who had committed this terrible crime.”

“We pray that this new appeal pushes someone to come forward and hopefully find justice and closure after all these years,” she said.
