Qualification scenarios for the semi-finals in India | ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

Despite their win against Pakistan in the second match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, the Indian team is in a precarious position for a semi-final spot in Group A. The Indian women’s team currently has the second-worst Net Run Rate (NRR) in the group A and must win their remaining two games by large margins to finish among the top two teams in the group.

India’s qualification scenarios

Scenario 1: India wins both remaining matches against Sri Lanka and Australia

If India wins its two remaining matches – against Sri Lanka and Australia – Harmanpreet Kaur’s team will finish the league phase with six points. In this scenario, India can qualify for the semi-finals if New Zealand beats Australia on Tuesday (October 8).

Scenario 2: India wins only one of the remaining two matches

Should India lose to Sri Lanka or Australia, their chances of reaching the semi-finals will depend on other results. Crucially, India New Zealand would have to lose to either Pakistan or Australia and the teams’ net run rates (NRRs) would then decide which team qualifies as the second team from Group A.

Scenario 3: India loses to Australia

Should India lose to Australia, their qualification hopes will depend on New Zealand losing to both Australia and Pakistan. In this case, both teams would end up scoring four points and the team with the better net run rate (NRR) would advance to the semi-finals.
