Kyle McDermot Tyrone: Young man who died after Ballymagorry attack named as police launch murder investigation

Kyle died last night after a robbery outside a property in the Victoria Road area of ​​Ballymagorry.

Independent councilor Jason Barr is a relative of Kyle and paid tribute to the 24-year-old online.

“A smile that will never be seen again. Kyle doesn’t deserve this,” he posted on social media.

“Please keep Kyle’s partner Chloe, his mother Claire, father Stephen, sister Stephanie and brothers Arden and Sheehan, as well as our family, in your prayers. Devastated beyond words.”

Kyle’s family home in Burt will remain strictly private during the memorial service, while his funeral will be open to anyone who wishes to pay their respects.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.

A 24-year-old man was arrested for murder and remains in custody.

It is understood Mr McDermot was involved in an incident with a man outside his property who knocked over his bin before being seriously attacked.

He later died in the early hours of the morning at Altnagelvin Hospital.

The A5 was subsequently closed between its junctions at Leckpatrick Road, Ballymagorry and Woodend Road, Strabane while police investigated the incident. It has since reopened, police have confirmed.

Detective Inspector Hazel Miller said: “Kyle McDermot died following an altercation that occurred in the Victoria Road area on the night of Sunday, October 6.

“A young man’s life has been cut short and a loving family must now try to come to terms with their grief. My thoughts are with them during this stressful time.”

Detective Inspector Miller continued: “Our investigation is still in its early stages and I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate my earlier appeal for anyone with information to come forward.

“If you were in or driving along the Victoria Road area of ​​Ballymagorry between 6pm and midnight last night and noticed an altercation or anything unusual, please contact us. In particular, I ask that you review any footage you have captured, including dashcam footage. Contact us on 101 quoting reference number 1670 of 10/06/24.”

She continued: “A 24-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the investigation remains currently in custody.”

SDLP West Tyrone MLA Daniel McCrossan said the community was devastated following the death.

“The local community is completely devastated after receiving news of the death of a young man following an attack last night,” he said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with this man’s family and friends. My heart goes out to them as they process this earth-shattering news. I am sure everyone in the local community will rally behind them during this terrible time.

“I commend the police for their rapid response to this matter and would urge the public to give them the space they need to carry out their investigations. Anyone with information should come forward immediately.

“At the heart of this matter is a broken family and it should be our top priority at this time.”

Independent councilor Raymond Barr, who lived near Mr McDermot, said the whole ordeal had left the small village “fearful and worried”.

“My thoughts and condolences go out to the family. “I condemn in the strongest possible terms what has happened here, there is a dark cloud over the Ballygomarry area,” he said.

“There is now a lot of fear and anxiety about what happened, particularly that something like this could happen here, and I know there is concern that something like this could happen again.”

“People here are devastated by this.”

Councilor Paul Gallagher echoed Mr. Barr’s comments and said his thoughts and prayers were with Mr. McDermott’s family.

“I didn’t know Mr McDermott personally but this is very sad. It is unimaginable how someone could be attacked outside of their own home and lose their life.

“Nothing like that happens here. My condolences go out to the family and I know the community is devastated and worried now. People now have serious concerns about their safety.”
