The M4 MacBook Pro appears to be revealed again in “unprecedented” benchmark and video leaks

These have not been good days for Apple. Last week, photos of the supposedly unreleased M4 MacBook Pro surfaced on X (formerly Twitter), with the poster claiming it was for sale on Facebook. Then over the weekend, Russian YouTuber Wylsacom did a full unboxing of what is supposed to be the same MacBook Pro lineup. And now things have gotten even worse for Apple.

Because a second person claimed to be in possession of the M4 MacBook Pro and posted a video as proof. The poster features another Russian citizen, possibly indicating a connection to the earlier leak. The one-minute video clip shows Russian YouTuber Romancev768 unpacking the laptop and sharing his first impressions of it. Although the MacBook Pro in this latest video is far less detailed than Wylsacom’s video, it shares many similarities with the laptops featured in the previous leaks.

The big question is whether these leaks are real Apple laptops or cleverly disguised fakes – and there are some compelling elements to what’s shown in Romancev768’s video. For one, the YouTuber shows the “About This Mac” screen in macOS, which lists the device’s launch in November 2024 – the same time that Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman expects the M4 MacBook Pro to go on sale.

The MacBook Pro in Romancev768’s video has the exact same model number and packaging as in previous leaks, while the device’s specs also match. This suggests that all the leaked laptops could be from the same batch. Whether this is a genuine batch from an Apple warehouse or a batch of fake laptops manufactured by a very enterprising fraudster is unclear.

Interestingly, the boxes in both leaks contain a QR code and the text “Scan for more information about your MacBook Pro.” Unfortunately, this QR code appears to be a bit too blurry to be scanned successfully, but where this code leads would probably give us an idea as to whether these products are authentic or not.

Benchmarks leak

And it’s not just videos that are said to have revealed the new MacBook Pro, but benchmarks have also appeared. A new Mac called Mac16.1 has appeared on Geekbench, and the results match the tests Wylsacom runs in its video. Both show a single-core score of 3864 and a multi-core score of 15288. Compared to the M3 chip with 8-core CPU and 10-GPU that you found in last year’s MacBook Pro, the single-core Result about 26.7% higher while multi-core result is 30.6% higher.

The chip featured in these tests is said to be an Apple M4 with a 10-core CPU, consisting of four cores in one cluster and six cores in another (this likely corresponds to the split between performance and efficiency cores) . The chip’s base clock is 4.41 GHz and it comes with 16 GB of memory, which is the same as the packaging of the leaked MacBook Pro.

In addition, benchmarks for Apple’s Metal graphics API have also been created. These show that the chip’s GPU can roughly keep up with the M4 in the latest iPad Pro, with the latest result reaching a score of 57,603. The iPad Pro, meanwhile, scored a score of 53,374, giving the MacBook Pro’s M4 an increase of almost 8%. However, the gap is larger when compared to the MacBook Pro’s M3 chip, which has a Metal Score of 47414 – a difference of about 20%.

The benchmarks vary from machine to machine and should therefore only be viewed as rough values. But regardless, they still provide a useful indication of the performance we can expect from the M4 MacBook Pro.

Possibly the biggest leak in Apple history

Nevertheless, there are indications that the leaked devices are fakes. They use the exact same image on the front of the box as the M3 MacBook Pro, something Apple has never done before (the company always adds a new wallpaper to its MacBook packaging). Additionally, the layout of the information sticker on the back of the box, which lists the laptop’s specifications, is completely different from previous MacBook Pro packaging. That doesn’t prove it’s a fake, but it does raise questions. Additionally, the “About This Mac” box demonstrated by Romancev768 may be fake. That doesn’t mean it is like that either Is wrong in this video, but the possibility remains.

If this is indeed a fake MacBook Pro, the most likely candidate is the current 14-inch MacBook Pro with M3 Pro chip and Space Black color. This matches many of the specs of the supposedly leaked MacBook Pro, including 512GB of storage and three Thunderbolt ports. However, it would take a software fake to hide a few things – this existing MacBook Pro has 18GB of storage and Thunderbolt 3 slots, while the leak appears to have 16GB of storage and improved Thunderbolt 4 ports.

The question also arises as to how exactly the Russian YouTubers got their hands on these laptops. From the packaging language and model numbers, it appears that the MacBooks were intended for the US and sales of Apple products are currently restricted in Russia. While Russian citizens can obtain Apple devices through backchannel methods, the idea of stealing not just one, but multiple Macs from a highly security-conscious company like Apple is a big one and then also Finding your way into an embargoed country feels like a challenge.

However, if these products are counterfeits, they have clearly been manufactured to a fairly high standard and are quite convincing to the naked eye. Ultimately, we’ll find out whether they’re real or not when Apple announces the M4 MacBook Pro at an upcoming launch event in October. If they do turn out to be genuine, it will almost certainly represent the largest product leak in Apple’s 50-year history.
